The anti-Microsoft attitude is curious. The Mac PC war rages on even though both are less dominant brands than they recently were. The anti-Microsoft approach is especially interesting when expressed by people and companies whose practices are built around PCs and Windows server technologies. It’s even odder that some are not including Apple products in their practice today, bordering on recklessness. Business Insider’s 4th of July fire cracker, by Julie Bort, a prolific anti-Microsoft reporter, is interesting, http://www.businessinsider.com/vmware-windows-is-coming-to-an-end-2014-7.
Mac vs PC: Retail Wars! by dotboom
The Mac PCwar have been getting a lot of air time since the 1980s when it was more Apple vs DOS. The case against Microsoft dominance was mostly dismissed as consumers focused more on the dot coms in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is still a thread in many people’s consciousness. The latest telling of the Mac vs PC has many twists today. It is more complicated than price point or ease of use.
Today the choices in connectivity device are vast. Mac PC war is way too simple. There are many alliances and no innocent bystanders except business consumers. The array of choices boggles the mind. Beyond phones and tablets there are many software and virtual device options to consider also. Wouldn’t it be too easy if it was just Apple vs. Microsoft? The world has fortunately become more complicated than in the days of Netscape browser wars.
MACs are great systems for some workspaces, iPads too. Tekmar Solutions has recently transitioned decentralized multi-office clients away from iPads to Surface Pro as true business laptop replacements. The iPads range of apps and simplicity have a solid niche.
Apple makes better consumer products than business tools but they have always had a successful blend that is savvy. IOS 8 is supposed to open up more businesses to Apple with their BYOD foot in the door due to their popular phones. VMWare is thinking about positioning there offering for that fall release. The consensus in the IT support community seems to be that Apple’s and more expensive to maintain in the enterprise than PCs.
It is great that VMWare is going to latch on to the Mac PC war marketing vehicle. It reminds me of the great ads with John Hodgman, the Mac vs. PC, , battle goes back much further than that. But what a hoot that video clip is with 114k viruses last year. Virtualization is part of an answer to security threats in the enterprise.
The death spiral of Microsoft in general and Windows specifically is exaggerated. Tekmar has always liked and embraced Apple products and VMWare. Too bad all IT providers don’t shake hands and play nice. But that is what Tekmar helps with so it’s a fault to be admired. None of the major enterprise IT providers are going away. The only thing certain is that they are going to change rapidly. Rather than being caught up in the MAC PC War make certain you and your business are getting the most out of the technology investment you have.
